The Dal Reading Society is a student-run book club promoting a laid-back, and low commitment community for all readers across campus. Our goal is to bring students together over a shared love for books and reading, whether it is new readers or avid readers. We meet monthly/bi-monthly to discuss current reads, share recommendations, and occasionally do an activity (make bookmarks, trivia, walk to coffee shop etc). The Dal Reading Society offers a pressure-free environment to the Dalhousie student community, as university life can be busy. Members do not have to read the monthly books to be able to come and contribute in the meetings, and we encourage all readers to join us and discuss any books that they have been reading. We create a calm and easy paced community at Dalhousie where readers can discuss with others alike. Student Members are strongly involved within the society through voting and having input on certain books we read, suggesting ideas such as events or themed discussions. We also actively engage with our members by using social media polls, where we highlight books that the members are actively reading! We like to have open-discussion so that members feel welcomed and encouraged to contribute. We offer executive roles to any member who wants to take on more responsibility, giving students a more hands on experience within the club. The Dal Reading society is important as we find a shared book is one of the best ways to start a genuine conversation, and make a friend. Dalhousie and King's both have a large population of readers, so we want to open that space to all book-lovers to be able to come to a safe space to enjoy their hobbies alongside likeminded people.
