The Dalhousie Birding Society is focused on getting students and the greater community interested in bird watching and bird conservation. A pillar of our society is accessibility; we aim to break down barriers that commonly make birding difficult and intimidating for the general public. This is done by making our society beginner friendly. We teach students the basics of birdwatching, how to identify birds both visually and from their vocalizations, how to use binoculars, and what they can do to help conserve avian species in their everyday life. Many of our events consist of guided walks outdoors, where we provide both binoculars and bird field guides, teaching people about the species we spot/ hear along the way. Furthermore, all of our bird walks over the past year (Fall 2025- Spring 2026) were accessible by bus. Our hope is to foster a community of students who feel excited, passionate, and able to engage in bird watching! Another pillar of our society is bird conservation. Our society enjoys partnering with naturalist and conservation organizations such as Nature Nova Scotia, and Hope for Wildlife. Through these connections, we aim to foster community engagement and provide students with the opportunity to listen and engage with experts who work directly in the field. These connections not only teach us and our society members about the conservation of birds, but also about help to inspire broader environmental stewardship and respect. Ultimately, the Dalhousie Birding Society aims to create a welcoming community where people can learn about nature, build connections, spend time outdoors, and develop a newfound or continuing respect for protecting birds and their habitats.
