Dalhousie Building Smiles Society (DBSS)

Health and Wellness

The main purpose of the Dalhousie Building Smiles Society is to create positive and lasting change in youth undergoing chemotherapy and other lifesaving treatments at the IWK health centre. We plan events and fundraise in order to create custom support/comfort baskets for youth to bring smiles to their faces during times of difficulty, including teddy bears, reading books, bracelets, etc. In doing so, we also raise awareness about paediatric cancers and their effects on the community. Our society organizes a variety of events in collaboration with partners such as SPINCO, MoveEast, and the Dalhousie Dance Society, promoting health and well-being while supporting our mission. We have become a recognized presence on campus through engaging initiatives such as our annual Valentine’s Day rose and candy gram fundraiser and our biweekly “Killam with Kindness” stations, which foster connection and positivity among students. Beyond campus, we are committed to community engagement through volunteer initiatives with organizations such as Phoenix Youth Programs, the IWK Foundation, and local care homes. These opportunities encourage students to give back in meaningful and impactful ways. Joining our team provides you with volunteer opportunities on campus and in the community, health advocacy and collaborative skills, and leadership experience. We promote an inclusive and safe space for all our members and hope to brighten the day of other students and youth suffering from cancer.
