Science
Dalhousie Science Scholars & Leaders Society (DSSLS), a branch of the Dalhousie Science Scholars & Leaders Program directed by Dr. Joseph Bielawski, is a co-curricular academic program housed within the Department of Biology, but open to all science majors. The program offers first-year interest groups, second-year science communication courses, and a mentorship program to recognize and develop the historically underrepresented potential of science leaders, innovators, and change agents. The society was established in 2023 by Eshan Arora to support that vision and provide a space where people at different stages of their DSSLP journey could meet, socialize, and advocate for diversity in STEMM. The DSSLS & DSSLP are working to change the way that traditional undergraduate education determines who can and should do science. The program is open to all students with a passion for science and a desire to make a difference in the world through a STEM career. The society does not require a student to be in the program, but the goals and majority of the participants overlap in both groups. The society promotes the active participation of its members in support of each other's success and the advancement of under-represented science talent among those who face systematic barriers. Through workshops, panel discussions, outreach events, and volunteering opportunites, the DSSLS aims to diversify and support future generations of scientists.
