The Surgical Exploration and Discovery (SEAD) program is a student-focused initiative within Dalhousie University's Faculty of Medicine that aims to provide early exposure to the field of surgery for first-year medical students. Through a two-week intensive summer elective, SEAD allows students to explore a wide range of surgical specialties, participate in hands-on skills laboratories and simulation sessions, and engage directly with surgeons and residents through seminars and mentorship opportunities. Student participants rotate through 11 surgical specialties, observe patient care in real-world settings, develop foundational procedural skills, and learn about both the clinical and lifestyle aspects of surgical careers. Student members are actively involved as learners, participants, and organizers, contributing to the program's success while building connections with peers, residents, and faculty members. SEAD is important because it provides opportunities that many students would not otherwise experience so early in their medical training. By fostering exposure, education, experience, and engagement, the program helps students make more informed career choices, develop confidence in clinical environments, and cultivate interest in surgical and procedural specialties. In doing so, SEAD enriches the educational experience of Dalhousie medical students and strengthens mentorship, professional development, and community-building within the Faculty of Medicine.
