Science
Our society aims to help create a more inclusive and cognitively diverse science culture by highlighting the values behind research and teaching at Dalhousie University. Through interviews with professors and researchers, we explore the motivations behind scientific work, how personal experiences shape research questions, and the ways diverse perspectives influence science and health. Science does not exist in a vacuum. What society chooses to study and what it overlooks reflects our values and systems of power. By encouraging conversations around how personal identity influences scientific practice, we aim to challenge the idea that science is completely detached from the people who practice it. We also aim to acknowledge the interdisciplinary nature of science and how it intersects with other disciplines or skillsets. Our interviews will be transformed into accessible articles and media designed primarily for undergraduate students entering the sciences. We want students to see that their identities are not separate from science, but actually strengthen the way they engage with it. By humanizing researchers and showcasing diverse pathways into academia, we hope to foster belonging in those pursuing science. By opening up conversations which acknowledge the humanity contained within the sciences, we also hope to bridge this gap between scientific research and the communities it serves.
