The Dalhousie University Nursing Society (DUNS) is a student‑governed organization committed to enhancing the academic, professional, and social experience of nursing students across the Halifax and Yarmouth campuses of the Dalhousie School of Nursing. Its primary function is to represent the interests of nursing students, foster a cohesive and supportive community, and coordinate initiatives that contribute to student development and well‑being. Through structured programming, advocacy, and collaboration with faculty and university partners, DUNS plays a central role in strengthening the student environment within the School of Nursing. As an integral part of the broader Dalhousie student community, DUNS organizes a range of annual events and traditions, including the Nursing Fall Social, the Dalhousie Health Professions Variety Night, the Nursing Ball, and the First Year Pinning Ceremony. These events promote engagement, celebrate student achievements, and reinforce a sense of belonging within the nursing profession. Weekly social gatherings further support connection between students and faculty, encouraging mentorship, collegiality, and open communication outside the academic setting. All students enrolled in the Dalhousie School of Nursing are automatically members of DUNS and are encouraged to participate actively in its initiatives. Members may run in executive elections, serve on committees, and contribute to the planning and execution of society events and charitable activities. The society’s importance lies in its ability to cultivate leadership, promote student advocacy, and uphold the values of professionalism and community that are foundational to nursing. Through its work, DUNS enriches the student experience and supports the development of engaged, collaborative, and compassionate future nurses.
