Dalhousie Walk In Our Shoes Society

Social Justice and Outreach

Individuals experiencing homelessness often face a higher prevalence of foot-related health issues due to prolonged periods on their feet, ill-fitting footwear, and comorbidities such as unmanaged diabetes. The Walk in Our Shoes Foot Clinic, operated by Dalhousie medical students, has been providing basic foot care to unhoused and underserved populations in Halifax for over a decade. However, one of the clinic’s greatest challenges has been unstable funding, which has led to multiple closures. These disruptions make it difficult to retain clients and establish continuity of care. The Walk in Our Shoes Society seeks to support the clinic through fundraising initiatives to ensure the continued delivery of these essential services. Additionally, our society aims to contribute to related causes, including diabetes awareness and advocacy for housing security. We plan to achieve this through events such as bake sales, trivia nights, and larger-scale fundraisers like charity runs. Student members will be actively involved in every stage, from brainstorming and planning to event execution. Ultimately, our goal is to support the health of marginalized populations in Halifax and work toward reducing health disparities.
