Science
The aims of this society shall be to increase society members’ knowledge of local geology by field trips and discussions at various meetings, to foster enthusiasm for the subject in its different phases, and to provide an opportunity for all the members to meet on an equal footing for their mutual benefit and enjoyment, and to create a welcoming and safe community amongst members. Dawson aims to foster community in the department and student success through engagement by way of various events that include students and professors alike. Running events is a large part of bringing members together and are planned collaboratively with executives, industry professionals, and other societies. Events include course help, outdoor activities, crafting, rock swaps, and bouldering. We also plan DIRT Talks which give students the chance to hear form an industry professional in the geology or environmental science streams. These events are open to anyone wanting more information from a graduate or professional. We collaborate with the Environmental Programs Student Society (EPSS) to plan department events for students and staff in both Earth and Environmental Sciences, including bowling and an end of the year banquet. Dawson is important because we bring people with a niche interest together, initiating new relationships, opportunities and bonds. We create a space for people to lean into their love for rocks with celebration and support.
