STEM-Arts Fusion Society (SAFS)

The STEM-Art Fusion Society at Dalhousie University is committed to breaking the perceived divide between STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) and the arts (visual and performing). By fostering a welcoming and accessible environment, we encourage students to explore the dynamic intersections of these disciplines, unlocking their potential for creativity, innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Through interactive hands-on workshops, engaging events, and thought-provoking activities, we empower students to embrace both STEM and the arts without feeling the need to choose one over the other. Our mission is to ignite curiosity, foster collaboration, and showcase how STEM and art can come together to create interdisciplinary opportunities and inspire innovative thinking. We intend to engage students in a meaningful and impactful way through STEM-themed coffee house events (showcasing performances from members), career/networking panels with individuals working in fields that involve both STEM and art (ex. Medical illustrator, etc.), and game jams where students using art & technology come together to craft innovative games with beautiful 3D/2D environments. More examples of events we plan to execute include a STEM-themed art contest/exhibition, using brain-computer devices to record participants’ brain waves as they engage in different activities (ex. Listening to music), movie nights featuring relevant films (ex. Inside Out) that portray STEM topics in an artistic and creative manner (followed by group discussions), and “the science of __” workshops, where we explore the science of different art forms (ex. The science of singing, where we host a singing workshop guided by the anatomy of singing to help with technique). We also intend to collaborate with other groups both within and outside Dalhousie, such as the Neurotechnology Club (dalhousie), Inch Events (event planning, hosting and public speaking business), and potentially FAME Can Productions (musical production company) to increase our reach, as we believe we are stronger together. The heart of our society is the following quote from Dead Poet’s Society: “Medicine, law, business, engineering, these are all noble pursuits, and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for”.
